| Feature Article: Leading In a Tough Economy |
|
For the past many months we have all been hearing and reading of the uncertainty pertaining to our economy in the United States and the impact of that uncertainty on businesses. As this cloud of concern expands it is becoming more and more evident that few industries, few businesses and certainly few of us personally can feel very confident of escaping the impact as we witness and experience the fear and concern becoming reality.
Moving among organizations quite diverse in terms of the industry of which they're a part, we find that what they generally share is a move toward conservatism. A move that involves freezes on hiring, layoffs, reductions in spending and a drive to find less expensive ways of operating. All steps to allow them to 'wait it out' and see what and when it will happen.
And can you imagine? These same organizations that are so engrossed in the game of cut, consolidate and conserve, dare to continue to dream of growth, profitability, and overall success. What are they thinking? Is this a disconnect?
Actually it isn't. It's the dreaming of possibilities that is often the basis of creating very real visions and what we rush to say is that this dream of growth, profitability and success is so achievable at the same time we are playing the cards of the three 'C's; Cut, Consolidate and Conserve. What we hear over and over is "we just have to get the people in our organizations to do more, meaning work harder and work longer hours."
Here's what we encounter, often: Read More

Creating High Performing Teams
|
|
What makes a work team more or less successful regardless of type? What accounts for some teams being able to really 'click' from start to finish and others that appear to slowly and often painfully, prod through their tasks? There are numerous theories that address these questions and there's one in particular to which we subscribe. It is called the Team Diagnostic Assessment developed by an organization that has conducted a great deal of research in the area of team effectiveness. It's one that we have often utilized in our work with teams and each time, we validate its' truth.
Accoring to the Team Diagnostic Assessment, a team's effectiveness and success is closely tied to factors that define the extent to which two key elements exist within the team; productivity and positivity. Here's some insight to what these are and how they are interrelated.

A Whole New Mind
By Daniel H. Pink
The author relates why the future belongs to the right-brained thinkers - people as designers, inventors, teachers - all creative and emphatic and to whom he believes the future belongs in terms of who gets ahead and who doesn't. He outlines the 6 fundamentally human abilities that are essential for professional success and personal fulfillment and how to master them.
Why we like it: What an exciting view and a welcome addition in this era of outsourcing to other countries and a tough economy. A Whole New Mind both challenges and invites opportunities for our dreamlike innovation which is critical to finding solutions to challenges facing business leaders in today's economy. It may take 'a whole new mind' to meet the challenges of doing more with less. At the very least, this book provides valuable insights and strategies for expanding the innovative capacity of all leaders.
